TCS to Offer Summer School Programs

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Tuscaloosa City Schools (TCS) is offering a summer school program for students who have demonstrated the need for additional academic support.

In the second year of the program, TCS is once again removing barriers by not charging families a fee. The program will be hosted at nine locations throughout the city for elementary, middle and high school students.

“We have planned enrichment opportunities to continue to promote students’ personal and academic excellence,” said Yosondra Irby, TCS summer school enrichment coordinator. “We are hoping to expand our students’ knowledge to bridge the learning gap between one school term to the next.”

Irby said the program is embracing the 2013 Alabama Summer Learning Challenge from the Alabama State Department of Education, which focuses on enhancing students’ math and reading skills.

Summer school courses will also expose students to the arts and community building, including community service, dance, fashion and design, music, poetry through spoken word, theater, visual arts and yoga.

“We have high expectations for all of our students,” Irby said. “We saw substantial improvements in students who completed last year’s summer school program, and we look forward to working with this year’s group.”

Schools will provide students with free breakfasts and lunches through the Summer Feeding Program, in addition to offering transportation to and from school.

TCS will also be taking students on field trips to receive additional learning experiences outside the classroom.

The program was open by invitation. The application process has closed. Summer school runs June 10 through July 12, with the exception of July 4 and 5 for the Fourth of July holiday.
