UPES and UPMS to host Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — University Place Elementary and Middle Schools are hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Aug. 16, 2013, to celebrate the schools’ return to the Forest Lake community.

The ceremony is set for 11 a.m. at University Place at 2000 First Avenue in the Forest Lake in Tuscaloosa.

“We are extremely excited to be moving back home into the Forest Lake neighborhood,” said Dr. Deron Cameron, principal of University Place Elementary School. “I believe the reopening of University Place is a major step in the revitalization process for this area and the city of Tuscaloosa.”

This fall, the schools will implement the STEAM framework. STEAM education is the concept of teaching across all subjects by connecting Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. It is a project-based, hands-on program providing in-depth subject knowledge, collaboration, critical thinking and problem solving skills, and learning about various 21st century careers.

“We have had so many parents ask about this program,” said Dr. Paul McKendrick, superintendent of Tuscaloosa City Schools. “On the first day that we opened the application process, we had seven parents at the desk at 7:30 in the morning. STEAM, plus a new school, plus the school system’s focus on science and math and engineering across the span of grades just indicate that we are providing programs and developing skills for students as they prepare for college and/or the work world. Even more importantly, our students have shown this is an exciting program. They can’t wait to get started. And that’s exciting for us, because it tells us that we are meeting children’s needs, preparing them for the future.”

University Place was also recognized as a Lighthouse School for its implementation of The Leader in Me Program, which is based on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People®.

“With our new STEAM program, the continual process of our 7 Habits and school garden among the many other activities we do, I think our return will be a win-win for all involved,” Cameron said.
