TCS to host anti-bullying forum

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. –- The David Mathews Center for Civic Life is hosting an Alabama Issues Forum to address bullying in schools. The forum is set for Nov. 7, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Central High School auditorium.

The National Association of School Psychologists reports that 160,000 young people miss school every day due to fears of being bullied. The educational effects are too harmful and long-term to ignore. Reducing bullying incidents will require the community to work together and this forum is the start to that process.

Two years ago, Tuscaloosa City Schools developed the Harassment Awareness/Learning Together (HALT) program through the Office of Student Services in order to address bully issues specific to the school district. Representatives from the district are thrilled to partner with The David Mathews Center in hopes of further encouraging discussion and action in the community.

“We look forward to bringing all stakeholders together from our schools, homes and community to address bullying and look for solutions from our forum,” said Audrey Ellis, Coordinator of Social Services.

Tuscaloosa City Schools implemented the HALT program in the 2012-2013 school year. The awareness campaign works to unite teachers, students, parents and community leaders in the fight against bullying in schools. To learn more about the HALT program visit www.tuscaloosacityschools.com.
